Welcome to the Blood Pathology Lab at Gachon University.
Dementia begins long before anyone notices it, and by the time symptoms appear much of the damage is done. Our lab works on two questions: what causes dementia, and how can we find it earlier? We look for the gene mutations behind early-onset Alzheimer's disease and related disorders in Korean and other Asian patients. We develop blood tests that detect misfolded protein clumps (oligomers), work that began with the Multimer Detection System more than fifteen years ago. And we study resting-state EEG and machine learning as quick, low-cost screening tools. Alongside this, we test plant compounds that may protect nerve cells and make nanomaterials for drug delivery.
I trained in protein structure and biophysics, and that background still shapes how we work: we try to understand a disease down to the proteins involved, then turn what we learn into tests that clinics can use. Much of our research is done together with hospitals and research groups in Korea and abroad, and our team is international.
If you would like to join us as a student or researcher, or to work with us as a clinical or research partner, I would be glad to hear from you.
