Research Areas
The lab's main research areas.
Our papers fall into six areas: the genetics of dementia, blood-based biomarkers, EEG and machine learning for screening, plant compounds that protect nerve cells, nanomaterials, and aging-related disease. The balance between them has shifted over time. Until 2020, the largest share reported gene mutations found in Korean and other Asian patients with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Plant-compound studies began in 2021, and since 2024 work on EEG and blood tests has grown fastest. The areas also connect: EEG measures are compared with amyloid-β oligomer levels in the blood, and plant compounds are tested against the same amyloid-β clumping that the blood tests detect.
Each area page lists its papers, and new papers on members' ORCID records are filed under an area automatically by keyword. The table under the list compares how many papers each area has produced in the last three years and before.
Genetics of dementia and neurodegeneration
We look for the gene mutations behind early-onset Alzheimer's disease and related disorders in Korean and other Asian patients, and work out whether new variants cause disease.
Learn moreBlood-based biomarkers
We work on blood tests that detect the misfolded protein clumps (oligomers) linked to Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia and Parkinson's disease.
Learn moreEEG and machine learning for dementia screening
We use resting-state EEG, neuropsychological tests and machine learning to tell healthy ageing, mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease apart.
Learn moreNeuroprotective plant compounds
We test spices, medicinal plants and their compounds for effects on several Alzheimer's disease processes at once, in cell-free assays and nerve-cell models.
Learn moreNanomaterials and drug delivery
We make silica, silicon and carbon nanomaterials for drug delivery and imaging, and study how nanotechnology is regulated.
Learn moreAging-related disease
We study how the brain changes with age and why some older adults are more likely to develop dementia, through brain-age prediction, cognitive reserve and later-life risk factors.
