Chanda Simfukwe, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor

Biography

Chanda Simfukwe develops quantitative EEG (qEEG) and machine-learning methods for the early detection of dementia. Current work compares resting-state EEG recorded with eyes open and eyes closed across the Alzheimer's disease continuum, using spectral power, coherence, gamma-band activity, time–frequency analysis and EEG microstates, and relates these measures to amyloid-β oligomer levels in the blood.

Work with Chung-Ang University Hospital has applied machine learning to neuropsychological tests (a digital Trail Making Test and the Rey complex figure), to brain MRI for predicting brain age, and to amyloid PET images. Chanda Simfukwe has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bionano Technology since 2024, holds a Korean patent on quantitative EEG for estimating cognitive status (No. 10-2931123), and is research director of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias in Zambia (ADDIZ).
